What links William Shakespeare, Charles Dickens, Casanova, King James I and a joint of beef? Hoghton Tower in Lancashire! This Elizabethan fortified hilltop manor house, one of the finest Renaissance buildings in England, is the ancestral home of the de Hoghton family. The Tower has played host to many famous figures in history including William Shakespeare, England’s greatest poet and dramatist and Charles Dickens, the most popular novelist of the 19th century. In 1617 King James I was a guest and at a banquet held in his honour he so enjoyed a joint of beef that he Knighted it ‘Sir Loin’.We invite you to take a stroll through history on a guided tour. View the State Bed Chamber, Ballroom, Banqueting Hall, Tudor well-house and underground passages. A delight for children of all ages is the collection of Doll's Houses.
In summer, the Wilderness garden and extensive grounds provide an atmospheric setting for a variety of events. These include classic car and motorcycle shows, falconry displays, children’s theatre, fun dog show, jazz and symphony concerts. The Great Barn on the estate is the venue for the Merchant of Hoghton’s monthly Farmers’ Market and visitors can often be seen relaxing on the lawns enjoying impromptu picnics. In winter, indoor events include guided candlelit ghost tours, classic comedy plays and ‘Deck the Halls’, a traditional yuletide feast of words and music held in the magnificent Banqueting Hall.
